Study a Bachelor of Education Honours in Education Leadership and Management online
The Bachelor of Education Honours in Leadership and Management is the very first online honours programme in Africa with six starts a year. It is a specialised qualification that teaches professional skills and knowledge that is required by the growing and changing field of education. There is a strong focus on research and aims to develop research capacity and academic scholarship. Students will take a close look at leadership theories and perspectives in the field of management. This programme is specifically designed for principals, deputy principals, heads of departments, district officials, experienced teachers and those wanting to pursue an education leadership career in other communities of practice. This part-time programme will require 21 hours of study a week.
Admission requirements
The admission requirements for this programme will adhere to the University of Johannesburg’s Admission and Selection Policy which is current at the time of the registration for this programme.
Admission requirements:
- A four-year professional teaching degree on NQF level 7
OR - An appropriate Bachelor’s degree and a professional teaching qualification (on NQF level 7)
OR - A four-year professional teaching qualification(s) as well as an Advanced Diploma in a cognate sub-field of Education (on NQF level 7).
AND - A minimum average of 65% for the previous degree
- Students who do not have the required 65% on the average marks for the previous qualification but have an average between 60% and 64% may be considered. Teaching and leadership experience will be taken into consideration in this case.
Applications from persons with equivalent qualifications will be considered by a constituted status committee in line with the University’s and Faculty’s regulation.
Students who apply for this degree may undergo a selection process which can include an interview or written submission.
Previous academic achievement and evidence of the necessary academic reading and writing skills to become a competent researcher of education leadership and management will be taken into account.
Applicants with 2-4 years’ classroom/field experience will be given preference in the selection process
Meeting the Faculty’s minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission as places are limited.

Technical requirements
- To complete your 100% online degree, you will need computer skills, a laptop or PC, and a high-speed internet connection (3G, 4G, LTE, ADSL or Fibre).
Module interruption and scheduled maintenance:
In the event of unexpected module interruption on the due date for an activity, the online facilitator will notify students of a new due date.

Education Resource Management (15 credits)
- Understanding societal developments
Organisational Behaviour in Education (15 credits)
- Introduce key concepts and theories relevant to the study of organisational behaviour in education
Education Resource Management: Policy (15 credits)
- Understanding the relationship between societal developments and education policies
- Explore how policies are described and the critical interpretation of policy developments
- Understanding the importance of effective and efficient financial management in schools
- Critical analysis of financial management functions
Education Theory A: Perspectives of Leadership and Management (15 Credits)
and Education Theory B: Perspectives of Leadership and Management (15 Credits)
- Ensure a solid foundation in current theories of educational leadership and management to enable research to be done from a firm epistemological foundation.
Research Methodology and Design (15 credits)
- Strengthen and deepen the student’s fundamental knowledge of research methodologies and design in education leadership and management
Research Projects (30 Credits)
Research Project A (0 Credits), Research Project B (0 Credits), Research Project C (0 Credits), and Research Project D (30 Credits)
- Engage in the research and writing up in an area of specialisation which will be supervised by a suitable member of the department
- The research projects will be developed and assessed in stages

Credit card is the recommended payment option and will reflect on your UJ student account immediately.

Bank deposit
- If you make payment at an FNB branch, ensure that your full name and student number are clearly written in block letters on the deposit slip, and that the teller selects the UJ Tuition Fee account for payment. Always use your valid UJ student number as reference.
- Please keep the deposit documentation in a safe place.
- Should you have any queries regarding the payment not reflecting on your UJ student account, email [email protected] and use your student number as the email subject.
Electronic fund transfers (EFT)
- EFTs must be made 72 hours before the registration period closes to ensure that the payment reflects on your UJ student account.
- EFTs made from outside South Africa take longer and it is recommended that foreign students make payment at least 10 days before the registration period closes.
- The ‘UJ FNB Tuition Fee’ account is available as a predefined beneficiary on the electronic platforms of all the major South African banks. Search for the predefined beneficiaries on your own electronic banking platform. and use your valid UJ student number as reference.
ATM
ATM payments will reflect on your UJ student account within 15 minutes.
- Use any FNB ATM that can accept cash
- Select the cardless services option
- Deposit the cash.
- FNB Recipient Name – key in UJ and then space, selecting the UJ Tuition Fee account.
Debit cards
- Debit cards (cards requiring a pin for the processing of your payment) cannot be used for online payments.
Cancellation & refund Policy
You can cancel your studies in a particular programme or module by official notification before the determined by the University.
Students are able to cancel their studies in a particular programme or module via their student portal or by submitting official notification to the relevant faculty officer before dates determined by the University.
If you cancel your registration before the end of the first week of the module (by midnight on Sunday, South African time), you will be entitled to a refund of 90% of the module fee OR to a credit of 90% of the module fee.
If you cancel your registration before the end of the second week of the module (by midnight on Sunday, South African time), you will be entitled to a refund of 50% of the module fee OR to a credit or 50% of the module fee.
On receipt of your cancellation, a credit will be allocated to your student account. HOWEVER, a refund will only be paid to the student on receipt of a completed refund application via the following link. If you fail to officially notify the university of your cancellation of a module after the end of the second week, you will not be entitled to any reimbursement or credit of the module fee. There will be no refund or credit for any cancellations in weeks three to seven of any running module.
